Behind the Horror: How Makeup Brings Monsters to Life at Universal Horror Unleashed

Update Crafting Monsters: The Magic Behind Universal Horror Unleashed At Universal Horror Unleashed, the haunting figures that terrify guests don’t just appear out of thin air; they are the results of meticulous artistry and collaborative effort. Each performer is transformed into iconic monsters like Jack the Clown or the Scarecrow through a process that blends creativity, skill, and innovative makeup techniques. For makeup supervisor Brody Cantrill, who has spent years honing his craft, the thrill of breathing life into these characters is a dream realized. Dreams Transformed: Brody Cantrill’s Journey Brody Cantrill’s passion for makeup began in his teenage years, inspired by the legendary special-effects artists he idolized. His journey led him through various roles in the haunting world, ultimately landing him the lead makeup artist position at Universal Horror Unleashed. Despite having never set foot in Las Vegas before, Brody uprooted his life, packed his family’s belongings, and embraced the opportunity. As he puts it, "My artists come from film and TV. Those of us that come from haunt houses know that haunter world; it’s awesome that we get to live in this year-round." The Year-Round Monster Factory Unlike traditional haunted attractions that operate seasonally, Universal Horror Unleashed employs a full-time staff devoted to monster creation. Brody’s leadership has introduced more intricate visual designs, shifting from simple masks to complex prosthetics, thereby enhancing the overall scare experience. This evolution in makeup artistry creates characters that are not only visually striking but also interact intimately with guests, sometimes as close as six inches away! The Crucial Role of Performers However, the transformation from human to monster is not solely reliant on makeup. The performers themselves are integral to the process. The magic transpires when the costume, makeup, and personal performance come together. Brody reflects, "One of the strangest and most satisfying parts of my job happens when everything finally clicks." It is through this fruitful collaboration of makeup artistry and performance that the ghoulish creations enchant and terrify guests. Universal Horror Unleashed exemplifies how creativity, artistry, and performance converge to create a terrifyingly delightful experience. As Brody Cantrill and his team continue to innovate and inspire, audiences are left wondering: What new horrors await?
